Metric At MTelus

We're a little bit backed up on getting my concert photographs up here on The Old Blog.  I suppose we will catch up at some point, but this would be a good time to remind you that my concert photographs can be seen in a much more timely manner by visiting V13Media, which you can do by following the link.  If you'd like an even more direct route to my photographs, you can visit my personal page over there but using the following link.  Canada Day was a month away when this concert took place, but there was a celebration of Canadian rock music at the MTelus in Montreal that week.  I’ve often seen the sold-out sign hanging from the pick-up window when I pick up my credentials, and it was hanging there again.  On this night it seemed like they had even managed to pack even more people in to the legendary venue as this was a show that nobody wanted to miss.  Metric and The Sam Roberts Band were in town to celebrate some of the great music that comes from our home and native land.  While on stage, Sam Roberts spoke about the tour, mentioning how it was the brainchild of Metric’s Emily Haines.  He mentioned how when he saw on the phone who was calling, he immediately picked up because one does not let a call from Emily Haines to the voicemail.   She suggested a tour that celebrates each bands most famous album, which would be played in its entirety.   Answering the phone was a very good decision.  Sam Roberts immediately agreed and the rest, as they say, is musical history.   The final act of the evening was Metric, another band that has dominated Canadian rock radio.  In keeping with the theme of the evening, Metric performed their album Fanatasies from start to finish.  The album helped Metric win a couple of Juno awards back in 2010 and on this night it had the crowd in Montreal dancing in a sold-out and very warm MTelus.  Opening track “Help I’m Alive” immediately got the crowd going as everyone’s heart immediately began to beat like a hammer as they followed the beat.  Emily Haines made her way to the front of the stage where she held court before the mass of fans that had gathered before her to have Metric rock their worlds.  Her voice remains one of the most iconic in the Country and it seemed like its power only grew as the night continued.  The rest of Fantasies got played, as well as some extra fan favourites afterwards to send the crowd home happy.  It was a sweltering 34 Celcius in Montreal the day of the show, but the temperature inside of the MTelus continued to soar as the evening progressed.  Hockey season may have come to an end for our Canadiens, but Housewife, Sam Roberts Band and Metric scored a hat trick.   All of the photographs were taken at f/3.2 while using various different shutter speeds, ISO settings and focal lengths.  Here are the rest of the photographs that I took of Metric while they performed on the MTelus stage.

If you would like to find out more about Metric and their music, you can do so by following the link to their website.  If you would like to see the photographs that I took of Housewife and The Sam Roberts Band, who also performed that evening, you can do so by following the respective links.  Much thanks to Nick Stern and Carla Bennett of Stern Management and Christopher Gonda of V13 Media for getting me a pass to photograph the show.  As always, it is very much appreciated.  Metric is one of the top Canadian bands of our time.  They always put on great show and this one was no exception. There only remained one show left on the tour after this Montreal appearance, but all three bands are sure to be back on the road again soon.  Be sure to check Metric out when they play in a town near you.

Sam Roberts Band At MTelus

We're a little bit backed up on getting my concert photographs up here on The Old Blog.  I suppose we will catch up at some point, but this would be a good time to remind you that my concert photographs can be seen in a much more timely manner by visiting V13Media, which you can do by following the link.  If you'd like an even more direct route to my photographs, you can visit my personal page over there but using the following link.  A recent trip to the MTelus in Montreal saw the city welcome home one of their favourite rock and roll sons, Sam Roberts and his band.  As they took the stage, Sam Roberts took a moment to remember a time not so long ago when the building was know as The Metropolis.  His comment that the building will forever be known by that name for him drew a huge roar of approval from the crowd who probably aren't the biggest fans of all of the cities venues seeming to be rechristened with corporate names over the last several years.  The Sam Roberts Band played their breakthrough 2003 album, We Were Born In A Flame, in its entirety.  Along with co-headliner Metric, follow the link to see the photographs, both bands played their breakthrough albums in their entirety, giving the fans in attendance a special treat.  Sam Roberts Band opened with Track One of that album, ‘Hard Road’ and played it all the way through to the end.  That album won two Juno’s for Sam Roberts back in 2004 and the album was a monster hit.  I still remember the first time I heard ‘Don’t Walk Away Eileen’ and 22 years later, the song still has the power to get an entire room to jump around to the beat to the sing along with the chorus.  The sing-a-long continued deep into the performance as Sam Roberts and the whole room were singing “I believe in rock ‘n’ roll!” during the performance of ‘On The Run’.  Though all of the songs on this night were from We Were Born In A  Flame, the Sam Roberts Band's most recent album, The Adventures Of Ben Blank, was released back in 2023 and a new UK release of re-recorded song, Frequencies, was released earlier this year.  Montreal loves Sam Roberts and his music.  They have for a long time now and that isn’t going to be changing any time soon.  All of the photographs were taken at f/3.2 while using various different shutter speeds, ISO settings and focal lengths.  Here are the rest of the photographs that I took of the Sam Roberts Band while they performed on the MTelus stage.
