In Flames At Place Bell

In the vast musical landscape known as heavy metal, it's always an honour to be able to photograph a band that is known as a pioneer in their style.  Hailing from Sweden, In Flames are among the small handful of bands who are credited with the creation of melodic death metal.  Having said that, there are actually no original members of the band left, though the present version is led by long time members Björn Gelotte on guitars and Anders Fridén on lead vocals, who despitre not being the original singer, performed on the early albums that helped break the band in North America.  In Flames have released 14 albums now, the most recent of which, Foregone, was released in February of 2023.  It always surprises me when I see those totals because I remember when their early albums were released and I can't believe that so much time has passed.  On stage, In Flames easily had the best light show of the four bands, though that doesn't mean it was the easiest to shoot.  Lots of spotlights and lights changing as lightning fast as the drum beats, coupled with the dreaded lead singer in a baseball cap, made for a challenging shoot, but also rewarding when I saw the final results.  The crowd at Place Bell in Laval was ready to erupt as In Flames casually hit the stage to a calm little acoustic piece, and within seconds, the lights had dropped, the guitars came to life and Fridén's roar served as a call to action for the first of many mosh pits to come.  The first photograph was taken at f/3.2, 1/640sec, ISO 10000 at 24mm and the second photograph was taken at f/3.2, 1/640sec, ISO 10000 at 27mm.  Here are several more photographs of their performance.

If you'd like to find out more about In Flames and their music, you can do so by following the link to their website.  If you'd like to see the photographs that I took of Whitechapel, Voivod and Meshuggah, who also performed that night, you can do so by following the respective links.  In Flames certainly lived up to their legendary and trailblazing reputation.  There aren't many acts out there who do it better than they do.  Be sure to catch their show if they're playing near you.
