It's always something of an unbelieveable moment when I find myself in a photo pit at the front of the stage, taking photographs of a band that I began listening to when I was younger. Never in my dreams did I think back in 1994, holding a copy of Apocalytpica's debut album, 'Plays Metallicaby Four Cellos', in my hand did I think I'd be photographing them almost 30 years later. 30 years...yeah, that doesn't make me feel any younger. In any event, after that first album of symphonic versions of songs by Metallica, a second album of cover versions was released in 1998, but the number of cover versions began to get smaller as more room was made for their own original compositions. Classically trained cellists, they have also been known to performer classical compositions live as well. One of their defining moments was playing Beethoven's 5th Symphony before some 200,000 people. This was Apocalytpica's third attempt at a show at the MTelus in Montreal, as the two previous dates ended up being postponed due to the COVID pandemic. They were touring their most recent album, Cell-o, which was released in 2020. It was a long time coming, but the performance was very much worth the wait. They were joined on stage for a few songs by sometimes vocalist Franky Perez, and also for another song by Christina Scabbia of the band Lacuna Coil, who had played earlier in the evening, but our pit access had ended before she hit the stage. I took advantage of taking my sneaky TV photograph of that song in order to at least partially record the moment. The first photograph was taken at f/3.2, 1/200sec, ISO 2500 at 41mm and the second photograph was taken at f/3.2, 1/100sec, ISO 2500 at 28mm. Here are several more photographs of their performance.

If you'd like to find out more about Apocalyptica and their music, you can do so by following the link to their website. You can also see the photographs I took of Lacuna Coil earlier in the evening by following this link. Many thanks go out to band manager Ulysses Hüppauff and Angie Resl of Odyssey Music Network for getting me a pass to photograph the show. Metal and classical music go very well together, and these guys have mastered bringing it all together.
